The Headline Plan Is Not the Whole Story
Skool is quick to start on. Here's what you hold as you grow, and when owning your membership starts working in your favor
Skool makes starting a community easy. The headline plan is the first thing you see.
It’s not the whole story.
Check Skool’s site for its current plans before you compare. Read them with one question in mind: as your community grows, who holds the member list and the payment relationship?
The faster you grow, the more of your business runs on the platform’s terms. That’s not a criticism. It’s just the structure. Know what you’re in.
Self-hosted on WordPress with MemberPress runs differently. Your hosting and plugin costs are flat, so they don’t scale with your growth. Whether that works out for you depends on your own numbers, so run them.
The numbers also don’t capture ownership. On a self-hosted setup, the member list is yours. The payment relationship is yours. The data doesn’t live on someone else’s platform under someone else’s terms. That’s not a small thing if you ever want to move, merge, or simply know your audience is actually yours.
Run your own numbers, and check each option’s site for current plans. Then ask the question the headline plan doesn’t answer: when your community grows, will the member list and the payment relationship be yours?
Worth knowing
When does owning a self-hosted membership start to make sense over Skool?
When you want the member list and the payment relationship to be yours. Check Skool's site for current plans, then run your own numbers on hosting and plugins.
Does switching platforms later fix the ownership problem?
Partially. You can export data from Skool, but the payment relationship (your members' card details, their billing history) lives with Skool's processor, not with you. Migrating means asking members to re-enter payment info, and some won't.
